Ethics in Artificial Intelligence
With generative artificial intelligence tools being integrated into every aspect of life, there is ever-increasing dialogue about ethical concerns in this realm. Regulations and governance are difficult to implement since these are enacted in response to ethical situations arising. It is quite nearly impossible to anticipate every concerning outcome of the array of AI tools.
We are a self-volunteered group of UTSW faculty, clinicians, trainees, staff, and students who meet once every two months to discuss AI and its considerations at UTSW and implications in larger context.
Proposed Ethics in AI Symposium - Fall 2025
We would like to gain insight into what our UTSW community wishes to discuss and hear about in this virtual symposium. We appreciate your time and feedback to bring you an immersive, valuable experience.
We would ideally like to hold sessions with dynamic discussions in the following areas:
Ethics in AI developed for patient care (includes AI-based tools and apps developed to reduce clinician burden & assist clinician diagnoses)
Ethics in AI developed for medical/ graduate education.
Ethics in AI for research (includes AI for research literature, developing AI models to analyze data, AI design off of large patient datasets to predict disease prognoses, etc.)
Ethics in AI developed for talent acquisition/ business.
Please note that the form requires us to collect your name and email. You must have a UTSW O365 account to fill out the form.
History
In May 2024, a core group met for the 1st time to discuss ethics in AI. Read their inaugural session report here.
The group reconvened in August with a smaller attendance and brainstormed meeting frequency, discussion topics, and logistics.
Dr. Darlene King took over leadership for this group in 2025.
In February 2025, we discussed UTSW’s AI oversight committee & AI Taskforce groups, heard from Dr. Andrew Jamieson & Dr. Elizabeth Heitman about their experiences of reviewing research proposals involving AI as members of the IRB (Institutional Review Board).
A bimonthly series of meetings has been established for the remainder of 2025.
